Walmart Coupon Policy
How to Shop for Free at Walmart
Walmart Coupon Policy reads
“If coupon value exceeds the price of the item, the excess may be given to the customer as cash or applied toward the basket purchase.”
What does that mean for you?
If you have a coupon for $3.00 off 1 bottle of brand X shampoo and the shampoo is $2.25 you will get the item for free AND have $0.75 in overage that you can either put towards other items in your cart or put out your hand and let them give you $0.75.
If you have 10 of this coupon and 10 bottles of the shampoo you would have $7.50 in overage. This is how I get my produce free and other items that are hard to get.
A few years ago I used this policy to get tons of free items and had the overage from every transaction applied to a Walmart gift card so I could keep track of what Walmart was paying me. Eventually I cashed out my gift cards and scored 2 free TV’s for my kids and a laptop for myself.
Occasionally you will run into a cashier that is not aware of this policy and you will see some resistance. I suggest printing a copy of Walmart Coupon Policy and carrying it with you.

You will want to highlight or circle this particular section that states how they handle coupon overage. If you experience an issue at checkout you can calmly pull out the policy and point to the highlighted section.
There are many occasions where a coupon exceeds the price of an item at Walmart and you can take advantage of the overage policy. Sometimes you will earn just 3 cents in overage and sometimes you will earn $3.00 or more in overage per coupon. When you see a coupon that earn a few bucks in overage that’s when you really want to step up your couponing game whether you want the product or not. Years ago there was a coupon out to save $8.00 on Iams cat food . The coupon had no size restriction on it. Whenever you see a coupon with no size restriction you want to look for the smallest size package to apply the coupon to maximize your overage dollars. Walmart had small bags of Iams cat food for $3.24. For every bag of Iams cat food I got for FREE Walmart paid me $4.76 for taking it. Ten $8.00 coupons earned me $47.60 in overage. This is also how I convinced my husband to let me get another cat. We know have 5 cats so maybe I took that deal a bit too far .. But enough about me. So whenever you see a coupon that will pay you well like the Iams coupon you are going to want to get a lot of that coupon even if you hate cats. The product can be donated to animal shelters or your crazy cat loving neighbor. The bottom line is that Walmart will PAY you to take the product and at $4.76 a bag they are paying yo very well. Coupons like this are when it’s worth paying a bit higher for a coupon. You can purchase coupons on clipping site and Ebay. The price of an $8.00 Iams coupon will not be cheap but before you decide to not pay the high asking price do the math. Ten of that particular coupon gave you 10 bags of cat food plus $47.60 in overage. If you had to pay $8.00 for 10 of those coupons you were still getting a great deal. Unfortunately coupons like this are rare but there are plenty of others that work out well .
